What if you could experience nearly 200 years of Lesotho’s royal history instead of simply reading about it? On #TheUpside, we explore Kings of Lesotho: The Royal Succession Story, a new virtual reality experience that takes audiences through the history of Lesotho’s monarchy, from the founding of the kingdom under King Moshoeshoe I in 1824 to the reign of King Letsie III. Using 360-degree visuals, archival material, traditional music, sound design and digitally recreated landscapes, the experience tells the stories of Lesotho’s nine monarchs while transporting audiences to important cultural and historical sites including Thaba Bosiu, Menkhoaneng, Mokhotlong, Kome Caves, Katse Dam and ’Maletsunyane Falls. Joining the conversation are Maneo Ralebitso, Project Lead of the Royal Archives, and Mokhethi Phohlo, Project Executive at MP Multimedia Pty Ltd, the Lesotho-based creative-media company behind the VR experience. In this conversation: - How the Kings of Lesotho VR experience was created - Why virtual reality can offer a different way of learning history - The story of Lesotho’s royal succession - The legacy of King Moshoeshoe I - Bringing archival material into an immersive digital environment - Recreating historic landscapes through technology - The role of traditional music and sound in telling Basotho stories - Preserving Lesotho’s heritage for younger generations - How African history can be told through new forms of digital storytelling - The potential of immersive technology in museums, education and cultural preservation This is more than a history lesson.
